A Memorial Day Call for Fire

“Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths of the grave” (Psalm 86:11-13 NIV84).

On Memorial Day (U.S. holiday remembering those who have died serving our country) I share this “call for fire” from Psalm 86. It’s my prayer today; last year I was preaching, counseling, and advising in Afghanistan. I witnessed death there; its scent and sounds still reverberate in my mind. God delivered me. As we reflect on this prayer and honor our fallen warriors, let’s continue to focus also on learning the will of God and how better to communicate with him and with one another.
